Lady Lake Hut

Hi All

Enjoyable weekend trip up to Lady Lake Hut just completed. Thanks to the Hut Preservation Society for providing a wonderfully designed and built hut that is within easy reach of people. Temperature outside dropped to -3 to -4 but thanks to the metho heater and five litres of metho the hut was 18 to 19 degrees during the evening and night. The metho cooker is a good thing to use as the twin burners gives the ability to tackle more elaborate cooking. Time up for most people would be in the one and half to two and half hour range with a 550 metre climb over three kilometres. Tank means good water on site but the tap will freeze after the sun goes down so stock up with water before this happens.

Only real downside is the bunks are quite narrow and the top ones rather close to the rafters. The hut can sleep six in the bunks with some space for bat-people in the ceiling and floor dwellers. The storage room is great for acting as a fridge/cellar. Beware though the decking is rather frost prone and check out the track to the toilet in day light. One of the more colder toilets in Tassie

One request to users. I love the charm of bottled wine but leaving a nearly burnt out candle in it just means junk for someone else to carry out. Same with tea candles. Half burnt ones are just rubbish. So lets look after the hut and keep the place tidy by not leaving "useful" junk behind. Our group cleaned up such junk but this issue is common with most non national park huts so let us all do the right thing.

The metho heater could do with a new knob on one burner and the tank tap is in need of replacement but these are minor issues in what is otherwise a great little hut. Once again thanks to the people behind it and request for all users to look after a wonderful place.

Cheers Brett

Is it really worth carrying an extra 6kg just for the warmth?

Got a real surprise, with bottle 1 litre of metho weighing in at 860 grams. Warmth is good for a luxury walk but attempting the same for six nights in the wilderness is not going to happen, mores the pity :(

My idea of a luxury trip is someone else carrying the metho.

Did not work out too bad. I lugged one litre, a fitter younger person lugged three and the D9 brought one litre of the most expensive metho ever sold  However, the walk was meant to be a gentle amble for people not use to overnighting. At Pelion a few weeks earlier the creeping cold put rather a damper on the evening and it was nice to be snug rather than fending off near zero temperatures which has the effect an early night in sleeping bags for many people.

Cheers Brett

I agree - its a nice little hut. Spent a night up there about 3 years ago, but we camped outside as another crew had got there before us (read: in daylight).
Hard slog up to the plateau, but worth it when you get to the top. I remember seeing a neat owl perched in the big tree out front for a bit as we were eating our dinner under the stars, before it flew off silently.
