Day walks in the Tarkine - unguided - any suggestions?

Postby ssloane » Sun 12 Dec, 2010 7:01 pm

We're visiting Tasmania in a few weeks and would like to head to the Tarkine area and see what everyone is talking about. We are experienced walkers/campers, but on this occasion we will have 3 children with us with limited ability to carry gear on their backs, so are unable to do more than day walks or, if pressed, maybe a single overnight walk.

Any suggestions on where to base ourselves and do some walking? We have 3-4 days available and we've got tents and cooking equipment.

We'd prefer not to pay some organisation to take us places - prefer to walk there ourselves, but will pay for a ferry if necessary.

Thanks for any help.

We based ourselves in Corinna for 4 or 5 days during winter last year and similarly in Stanley, and did a number of day walks in and around the Tarkine region.
Plenty of options for self-guided short walks from or near Corinna. Really enjoyed it although it rained a lot of the time; we walked anyway. We stayed in an old miners cottage there but they also have car camping facilities. Would be good for kids I think but suspect it gets busy over the Xmas period.

I would recommend going into Philosopher Falls, the walk goes through some great rainforest and there is quite a big waterfall at the end. Lake Chisholm is also a good short walk (there's also camping near here).

I have done Tarkine Falls as a multiday, there is a good track and fantastic forests and fungi, but this walk would depend on how fit your children are.
It is easier to go down a hill than up, but the view is much better at the top.
