Hi all,
I'm thinking of heading up the west coast for a couple of nights next week, I was just wondering if anyone knows of where to access Mt Dundas and also Mt Owen from? I've heard Mt Owen is best up from the locked gate at Linda, is this the best and quickest way?
I was also wondering if anyone had been up Mt Black? From memory it's covered in fairly thick forest, and I assume you cant use the mine road. I haven't decided exactly where I am going yet, but some info on these peaks would be appreciated, it might help me make up my mind.
Cheers,
Jared

A good option would be the Jukes range.
We did this as a weekend trip, drive to Q'town, haul packs up to Mt Jukes area & picked up the other peaks as a side trip.
Next day was just down & home but you could also incorporate Owen into this day.
With an earlier start (ie. no drive) a day trip around the 4 Jukes peaks wouldn't be that hard, beautiful area obviously:
viewtopic.php?f=9&t=5756&p=69522&hilit=jukes#p69522Bap has done Dundas & maybe a couple of the others out that way, maybe send him a PM.
Obviously Murchison & Julia Peak also 'must do's' in the area.
Have fun mate.

Hi pazzar,
Looks like you need to get the OzTopo maps.......they show most of the usual trails.
Access to Mt Black is normally from the saddle on the highest pt. of the hwy.
For Dundas....Turn into Howards road at S41 56.803 E145 26.701 off the hwy...then take the trail at S41 56.170 E145 28.036
Owen.....easiest is possibly the road...but from memory the walking clubs have a trail which goes up and around on the southern side...just to the right of where the road goes up.

I'm picking up the topographic maps this afternoon. I'm heading up on Monday afternoon, so I think I will attempt the jukes area in a day, then head up to murchison and Julia on Wednesday, and do anything I find time for on the way back

That pic labeled 'ascent ridge' looks pretty hair raising. Is it as exposed and techy as it looks?
