Camping on Mt Roland

Postby the_camera_poser » Sun 20 Jul, 2008 10:00 pm

Is there anywhere on Mt Roland suitable to pitch a 2 man tent and spend the night?

Thanks!

Hi guys, I know this is old but is it possible to camp somewhere on Mt Roland, i.e on the saddle?

In a bout of concern for unconventional campsites (imo there are a lot of valid reasons besides 'fragile areas'), deleted posts here. I put in a camp while doing track work up there, If you really need help, send me a private message.

maybe a hardened campsite will come out of all this development stuff.

Ah right, yes, I appreciate and understand your concern - good call.
It allegedly says "free-range" camping is permitted on Mt Roland, but I'm not entirely sure what that means and would obviously prefer to use an established or suitable campsite, if one existed.
Thanks for your input, I will PM you - however, I don't seem to be able to quite yet as I've only just joined.

A specific campsite up there would be nice. The place i used, ive put a few people on to but who am i to decide where a 'public' campsite should be established... Ive shot a map your way endy, it gives one suggestion. They get a bit scarce toward Roland but back west there would be many suitable spots.

Gustav and Kate Weindorfer's campsite for their honeymoon would be a historically important site that would do as a campsite on top of Mt Roland. They spent 5 weeks up there in1906...unfortunately I do not know where thay camped but they did have a clear view of Mt Roland....

I haven't been up Mt Roland since my honeymoon, (and a couple of times when I was in primary school). I remember there being a lot of wide flattish areas, with small scrubby plants. I'm sure there'd be plenty of spots to camp up there, and I can't see any reason why the PC police would have a problem with discussing it, unless somebody believes it is a sensitive area (it didn't leave the impression of sensitive on me, but it was a while back).

My only concern was that the last people I gave detailed info reported back that 'my' site actually had a track being formed to it. Cant think of anything particularly 'fragile' (though those with aboriginal heritage might want to seek some local knowledge).

I think you would have to take your own water up there, unless you want to camp over the other side near the falls - or (if it rains) collect rainwater from the tent fly.

When the Strollers did an overnighter ( was it last year??) in summer even after heavy rain on day one there was little usable water in O'Neil's creek up top however there was plenty in the Falls creek over the back a bit with good camping sites :)
