South Coast Track

Mon 01 Aug, 2011 12:19 pm

Hi all,

Thinking about walking the SCT this summer & am looking for some input from those with experience of the area. Specifically, I want to know how many other people (on average) we would be sharing camp sites with - How many start the track each day? And, regarding the mud, would we be better off tackling the track in Dec or late Jan?

All advice welcomed!

Late Jan would be slightly drier than Dec, but not enough to make any difference I wouldnt have thought.

Likely to be anywhere between 4-40 other groups at the other campsites.

Theres about 1300 per year, best of luck they don't end up leaving on the same day. I'd imagine it would take a pretty severe drought to tame some of that mud..

Thanks folks,

Lets hope we can pick a quiet period to start. As for the mud, we expect to covered in it - but there's a big difference between it coming up to your knees or coming up to your arm pits. We may just have to suck it and see!

I walked the South Coast Track in October a few years back and the mud wasn't too bad. Lots of boardwalk etc, meant that the sections of mud were pretty short. Probably only went over my knees once and lots of creeks to wash off in. (It is all relative though, we walked the Port Davy track to get there, that was MUDDY!)

Most of it's too thick to get through a straw. And the flavour . . . :?

...but how tall are your knees? I'm 6'4", so what only comes up to my knees will almost drown the little lady - as you say, its all relative

cheers

I walked the track solo last Feb doing it again next Feb, Wasn't as much mud on the track as I was told in these forums. Had a few pockets here and there wasn't really deep tho half way up my shins was the deepest. I walked the track in 9 days having 2 days rest. maybe came across a dozen people in all that time, I went 3 whole days without seeing anyone great stuff. Go and do it you will have a ball. Some over exaggerate the track conditions but the best way to find out for yourself is to walk it. All the camp sites have plenty of room and water close by. The best thing to do is stop and look around and explore when you can to many people are head down and walking as fast as they can as if it is some race to the next camp site????? So have fun.
