Suggestions - Winter Walk

Postby gilliehead » Mon 01 Aug, 2011 12:05 pm

Hi all,
First post.
I have a week off uni late in August and was interested if anyone has a suggestion for a roughly <6 day walk within Tasmania?
Possibly doing it solo, have suitable gear for conditions and am 'reasonably' experienced.
Thanks kindly for taking a look.

Depending on the forecast there are a number of options. Walls of Jerusalem area or Pelion area spring to mind. I have a week off also and am spending 7 days in the Labyrinth/ Du Canes area. There are several week long walks in the SW, but I would avoid them at that time of year, it is fairly exposed and very unpredictable in August.

Overland Track is good in winter - no buzzies, bugger all people and huts if it turns bad or you get hurt. Sidetrip into the Labyrinth highly recommended, be careful of your navigation. And be aware that the ferry probably is not running.

South Coast Track - same as above except for the huts and getting in can be an issue unless you start at Scotts Peak. The weather can stop flights.

Western Arthurs - But you really do need to be on top of your game. One of the best Traverses in the world, but can get hairy with wet rock and really, really wild weather. Great fun.

Let us know what you pick, take some pics and post a report.

I like the Cradle Cap walk this time of year. the huts are usually empty of visitors and apart from the sodden lodden mudflats, its a great walk.
