I would carry 2 pairs of thermal long johns. Walk in quick dry shorts and gaiters and then wear the thermals around camp. If you get really cold when walking then put a pair of log johns on and over pants as well. Thermal pants work well in camp so why carry others?
I am always surprised how warm I stay when walking in shorts, even in light snow they are fine. I just really hate the sweaty feeling of walking in rain pants.

Depends how each person's body handles the cold I guess. If I am tenting I rarely carry camp trousers, but if I am staying in a potentially unheated hut I always carry them. I just find that if the temperature is in low single figures my legs get very cold if I'm in thermals alone and doing little physical activity.

If it rains non stop would you wear shorts? I've not walked the OLT, but eight days of constant rain and snow in Patagonia made me appreciate GoreTex over pants.
In July in Tassie will you need the bug repellant?

Because longs are way too hot and usually end up with mud and water working its way up the insides of the legs anyway. Rain pants are for storm conditions only for me.

Yep, shorts all the way
My legs are very waterproof on their own! I agree with strider than over pants are for storms or bad snow only.
When you are moving along with a pack on you can wear shorts 90% of the time and never be cold.

Depends if I have a proper length rain coat or not. I don't mind we legs, but I don't like walking when drenched to the waist.

I often take short nylon shorts (like running shorts) for wearing in the rain. If it is cold - then I wack on overpants, and save dry long pants for the hut/tent.

However, Tassie in winter can be cold, especially if also wet and windy, or snowy (pretty typical conditions!) - so a good choice is walk in long john type thermals and shorts, and if wet - over pants on top. And also carry fleece pants for the hut/tent.

It's one way of discouraging leeches, although if it's cold enough even they won't be much of a problem.
