I have found my Macpac Minaret a good tent for the range - a good compromise between weight, interior size when stormbound, and weatherproofness (wind and rain) - BUT - it is the old style Minaret - and has shock cord on the guys around the base of the tent - ideal for clipping onto nails on the tent platforms. I think shock corded guys are very handy. Also - you want to carefully consider what sort of tent pegs to take when not using the platforms. Aluminium channel type pegs (they have a right angle profile) are very good in boggy ground (which is about all you get there) Use long ones for the guys taking the most strain.

For light weight (and comfort) I use a hammock, is just a solo option but with a big tarp you can have to hammocks under the one, keeps you away from some critters too.

On fabrics though silnylon is very water proof and light weight, much better than normal polyester based fabrics. Other light weight fabric options are SpinnUL and cuben, although the latter is allot more expensive.

I have a small silnylon tarp and a bigger hex tarp, currently looking at getting a bigger silnylon or Spinn one just due to the weight and feel of the fabric, repels water like nothing else, basically whack it to get it dry.

Have you used it on the WAs?
I would imagine that you would have a struggle finding somewhere to hang it.
The usual campsites dont have many substantial trees.

I have a Macpac Minaret made from silnylon. It's excellent.

When deciding what sort of tent to use in the SW Tas high country, ask yourself how happy you will be to spend a couple of days straight in it when the weather's too bad to go out side. I'm a fan of light weight gear, with the exception of tents. If your tent fails in the worst of conditions you die.

Hehe - Oh we have to be careful don't we. I'm glad not much gets past the Unit police (or is that the Police unit) and the Human Spell Checker(NNW) - keeps us on our toes does'nt it Brett? :P
'Tis nice to know one has a tent that other people recommend and trust in all conditions. Between my Macpac Minaret (old style) and Nallo3 (yet to be used by me), I feel confident that if anything goes wrong it will be my fault. Thats at least some of the confidence equation sorted. :) I'm still testing me in all conditions let alone my gear

In the Western Arthurs are there enough trees to consider taking a hammock?

No.

I wouldn't even want to consider the thought. I know how nasty it can get out there, even in the warmer months. It'd be a pretty horrible to have to wait a day for weather without a tent to stay dry in.

Haha. No point Mel. A simple No was more powerful than anything else.

It's all alpine shubbery up there. And at High Moor, there is.... well a moor! SHOCK HORROR! No plants at all really!
