Re: Worst walk ever....

I was scaling down a few cliffs in an attempt to get down Sharlands. I dont recommend the way I went. I fell with nothing on my back, landed on rock. It hurt a bit, but I'm still alive. For the full story, go to Lake Vera hut.

I look forward to reading it in a couple of days time. Expecting the Loddon's to be the worst trip of my time given the large amount of rain in the last few days?

I've already logged N. Wilsons Prom as my worst walk, but there was another shortly after that was a useful lesson for my bushwalking career. About 1975 I did a walk with the YHA over Mt Tamboritha to the Crinoline. The second day was very hot. First Lesson: wear a collard shirt when bushwalking. Most of the party bailed out after the Crinoline (a track to the youth camp), but fit and foolish, I elected to go on down the spur between the Wellington and the Macalister (?) rivers. However, I only had a 600ml water bottle, and quickly ran out of water.

Trouble was, we could see the water of the Wellington, but the sides of the spur were too steep to descend for several miles. Finally we were able to get off the ridge, trudge across the flood plain, and I remember shaking off my pack and walking straight into the river for a drink and a swim.

After that I never went anywhere without a minimum 2 liters of water.

BTW, if you get a chance, the Crinoline is one of the best peaks in Victoria.

must have been bad to top a helicpoter ride, what happened there? *&%$#! must have really hit the fan to get the chopper in.
I would put the Gell descent as my worst ever walk, we did the circuit in there reverse direction that you attempted it in. All was going well until the summit of Gell and then the weather closed in, the descent off gell to Austalia tarn was difficult, negotiating between scrub and rocky outcrops. and the button grass at the bottom of the valley just drags on. we descended to the north of the Hippogriff which in hindsight appears to be the wrong choice.

Chopper ride was due to a jarred hip from a fall on Moraine A. Wasn't fun, but as a whole, the trip was good. I got some stunning weather in the Mt Hayes area.

I agree that descending north of the Hippogriff would be grim. I think straight down from the buttongrass saddle is the way to go, it wasn't too hard to negotiate going down. I had really open forest coming up, I think I was pretty close to the Chimera summit, but the weather was horrible so I just followed a compass bearing towards the Hippogriff. I look forward to going back in better conditions, now knowing the best way to get up there. Mt Gell may have other ideas!
