where is this waterfall?

Postby donktec » Fri 29 Jun, 2012 10:45 am

Hi all,
Some friends and i are heading to the Walls at the end of next week for a 4 day trip. The NLA has this http://nla.gov.au/nla.pic-vn4776323 picture of a frozen waterfall by Peter Dombrovskis. The description says that it is in the WoJ park, but was hoping someone could provide a specific location, as we are keen to take a look. Thanks!

Hard to tell but I'd assume it's Meander Falls(not in the Walls)???

It is Meander Falls, generally first week of August to see them frozen.

Thanks for the info guys. Don't think we'll be finding the falls this trip in that case...

That waterfall looks much too short to be Meander Falls, even if it was just the upper part. I'm inclined to agree with ILLWUTAS that it is more likely to be Grail Falls.

Hi Donktec,

It is possibly one of the soaks on the southern side of Mt Ophel that freeze in winter rather than an actual named waterfall. Near the NE corner of Lake Solome tucked up in the pencil pines are a number of short cliffs and depending on the season some picturesque ice can be found cascading down them.

I have attached a photo of some of the ice here from a couple of years ago. I have been tempted to take ice climbing gear in there but haven't bothered as yet as the chance of getting solid enough ice there is pretty rare (but possible).

Enjoy your time up there.

Mark

I would have put money on Grail Falls. But I could be wrong, it could be a number of spots. I dont think it is Meander, by even the broadest definitions you cant really lump it in the Walls of J NP.

...but, then again, I can nearly see how it might have been taken from the other side of the old dead tree in this shot.

That photo of Chalice looks good!

Unfortunately we missed out on fresh snow this trip. There was some ice around on the cliffs and some of the lakes were frozen over - which was fun. Might put up a trip report with some pics in the other part of the forum. Cheers.
