I'm hoping to do a walk into the Chapter Lake/ Grail Falls region in February. Can anyone update me on any reasonable campsites in that area?
I'd appreciate details like No. tentsites, scabbiness, Grid Ref etc.

By 'good' I think Corvus means serviceable. My memory of the place was of a dank, dark, cold, uninviting place with space for only the smallest tents between the tree roots - but memory is such an ephemeral thing . It were already late in the day when we arrived, else we would've moved on!

I would plan to camp up on the plateau, depending on the weather.

Up and back to Grail falls is a day walk. If you are going on you might be better off to campus up stream, or above the falls if heading onto the plateau. It will be hard to do the full 'low impact' camping thingy at the falls.

Some good campsites right up on top, just south of the summit of Cathedral. Also sites at the small lake mentioned in Chapmans book. Just above Chapter lake.
I don't think much of the campsite at Grail Falls. I prefer not to be in damp spots with lots of tree cover.

The Chapter Lake camp near the Falls is not quite one of those 'only if you have to' spots, but close to it. Better camping up the top. Tent Tarn, if you get that far, or around the sides of Chalice.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'd considered going up to Chalice, but was thinking about a short 1st day in a longer trip (big pack & uncertain what time I'd start walking). I'd then played to explore Chalice Lake/Cathederal mtn area & return, as a day trip from that first camp before heading for Junction hut day three. Any other suggestions or ideas for a good camp spot that fits that general itinery? Also my map doesnt have a tent tarn marked.

Do the extra hours walk to Chalice, there is a good camp spot on the northern shore of the Lake about half way round The Grail falls camp spot looks damp and uninspiring, a waste of a night in the bush when there are better places to camp nearby.

Rather than going return day trip to Cathedral region just camp up there on a through walk. Whats your plan after junction? I did a trip in that region which consisted of Day 1 walking up jacksons creek track (not marked on map but easy to follow) climb MT Rogoona (up from lake myrtle and down to lake meston) stayed at junction lake hut. Day 2 North along cloister lagoon then up on to cathedral plateau past chalice lake, to twin spires, then camp along the ridge towards bishops peak (i didnt know about tent tarn either) but there are plenty of suitable spots on the range. Day three walk out to deans bluff then down to the track just upstream of grail falls and then the short walk home. Was a good trip and has the bonus of being a circuit so no back tracking or car shuffling

I was quite happy at a little spot beside a clearing near Grail. The falls are noisy though. Camped there a couple of times at least, but a few years back now.

We've done something along these lines a few years back - nice circuit walk.

I've slept up on the huge rock at the base of the falls, the one that looks out to the falls. It was a better option than that dark and soggy patch of Myrtles. The falls are loud having them right there, but I found them to drift off into the distant and ended up sleeping a good night. It was at the end of a long day, so I couldn't be bothered finding anything better, but I'm sure if you looked you would find something wonderful!
