hello, first time poster here
Hi, I am an experienced bushwalker, am 42 years old, have all my equipment and have done scores of overnight walks
am interested in doing some overnight walks in the Tarkine. A few years ago I did an 8 day solo walk west of Lake St Clair, off track and did not see any people except for first day and last 30 minutes of final day. I have an Epirb. I have a car. Not as fit as I used to be (slightly less fit, but now woeful). Would like to think I am no fool as I have done scores and scores of overnight offtrack solo bushwalks. Can use a map and compass very very well.
Was thinking of doing some overnight walking in the Tarkine. Maybe start with some 3 or 4 day walks, off track or on track, either is fine.
I know Tassie a iittle, my 8 day solo off-track walk there was very good, very challenging. Am experienced enough that I would like to think I less likely to make silly mistakes.
Would prefer less travelled areas, (thus think I will leave the western arthurs and overand track to others for a few years).
I have a couple months to kill,,, is it best just to go to Devonport or Lauceston and ask the camping shop?
Any suggestions for some good 3 or 4 day walks in the Tarkine, off track or on track is fine.

I've just got back from the area, a walk from Pieman Heads to Temma along the coast would rate amongst the best in the state imho. It's now very high on my wishlist.

thanks for that
found those 2 areas on google maps. Looks like there is a walking track there, which sometimes goes along the beach, and is sometime a walking track. Is there a road access where I can get back to the car. I do reaslise that I need to get some more maps (can do so in next few days), as maps I have are only of area west of lake st clair
what i mean,,, is can i do a loop, as opposed to having to retrace my steps
It looks like a nice walk, maybe 3 days. Looks as though could leave car at Temma, walk most of the way south via beach and walking track, then take the road which is about 5km inland to get back to the car. Either way, looks a pretty good option for a walk that is not super super stressful
I will get some maps from paddy pallin here in melbourne (better than guessing)

I'm no expert of the area (only went there once) but you could have quite a bit of fun North of Trial Harbour too. It's not exactly the Tarkine, but I reckon you would be alone and with your skills could do a loop inside the Mount Heemskirk Regional Reserve, there must be a doable loop, where you could go off track for one way, and take the Climes Track the other way (the 4WD road between Trial Harbour and Granville Harbour , some info there :
http://202.139.253.217/TrekNotes/TAS/Climes_Track.aspx ). A walking track starts at the Northern end of the Trial Harbour Campground, so you could leave your car around here. I didn't do it, but when I drove there and spent the night at the campground, I wish I had. I didn't think there would be so many mountains/hills so close to the coast, drive from Zeehan to Trial Harbour and you'll see what I mean.

I have been looking at either being dropped at Pieman Heads by boat. I believe the people at Corinna can help with this and walking out to Temma where I would leave a vehicle,
Another trip I have eyed off is walking to Sandy Cape from the Western Explorer over the Norfolk Range. Either via Mt Hazleton(there is a track most of the way up) or a more complex route over the range from Mt Edith to West Bluff(all off track and reportedly very scrubby).
I have just returned from a 4WD based working trip along the coast, the landscape is stunning but the aboriginal heritage is quite remarkable and something all Tasmanians should see.

Ok thanks for all that
I can give the Corina people a call and see if I can arrange a boat journey for a time that can suit them. Might be able to save some money if I can arrange my travel times to fit into them to a degree. I will look into the other walks too (mentioned in this thread.
I have February and March to get around, so should be able to spend a few weeks down there.
Went to Paddy Pallin today, they did not have many topographic maps of Tasmania, but they gave me a card for a place in East Malvern that has lots of maps, so can do that later this week.
I think I have a good start. I want to avoid a few of the 'touristy' things like the overland track, the SW track and the western arthurs. Can leave the overland track till when I am old and grey, the others they say are good, but will research them in detail before committing myself to such a long walk. Dont think am quite as fit as I would like to commit to SW track. Not unfit,,, just not super fit. Did a 3 day walk in December, Will start with 3 and 4 day walks,,, build up my strength before committing to something big.
