Day drive/walk to see beautiful cushion plants

Sun 21 Apr, 2013 11:03 pm

Hello all,

I have just seen the beautiful pictures of the cushion plants in a thread on this website; it was the cushion plant photo competition. They are just beautiful. Thank you for sharing the photos.

My wife and I are visiting Tasmania for a few days and have a day to ourselves, in amongst visiting family. I have dreamed of seeing Mt Anne, and in particular, the cushion plants, as photographed by Peter Dombrovskis, the deceased father of a close friend of my wife. Ever since I'd seen the images I was completely hooked on going to see this spectacular region. Alas, our trips were always so short that I usually only got to Mt Wellington! Although we did once get to Cradle Mountain, which was exquisite.

So, my question is, is there a day drive and walk that will afford us the opportunity to see this amazing plant? I know that to get to the area is only 140 odd kilometres, which should only take around 2 to 3 hours. I also know that the Mt Anne circuit walk is a 4 day walk. I have only 1!!

Any suggestions will be gratefully appreciated.

Thank you and sincerely,

David

Can't give you any help with the Mt Anne bit I'm afraid, but I did see lots of lovely cushion plants while heading out to Mt Field West recently, which is easily doable in a day! And a lovely walk to boot.

Ageed, some excellent specimens. If you want to see Mt Anne there is a lot on the Eliza Plateau, easily done as a day walk however Pandani Shelf the location of PD's photograph is not a day walk. These areas are very exposed and not suitable for people that have never bushwalker before(?)

There are some cushion plants at Pine Lake and even on top of Wellington if you go looking.

Yes they grow on any alpine area. Even around the lakes highway they can be found just off the road.

The one on the Pandani shelf is the most amazing i've ever seen. It's just so big.

I seem to recall seeing quite a few along the Hartz Mt track. Also easy to get to and a good track, with other items of interest as well.
