Frenchmans Cap Track camping spots

Postby philm » Wed 01 May, 2013 11:50 am

Planning a trip to Frenchman's cap and Irenabys in January and wanted to ask questions on the best spots for camping (in tent).

As we will be arriving at the start of the track later in the day is there any good camping say 1-2 hours from the highway on the track?

Is there good spots near the 2 huts for tents?

We are planning a trip to Irenabys - is there any spots on the Frenchman's side of the Franklyn to pitch a tent?
I understand there is a good camp on the other side of the river but not keen on a crossing as we will head back to Frenchmans!

There are good camping spots both sides of the Loddon River about 6.5km along the track. Note that the new track bypasses the other camps mentioned in John Chapman's book.

There are camping sites at both huts, although there are more at Vera.

I believe that you can camp either side of the Franklin, but I haven't been there myself.

Not sure now that they've re-routed the track slightly. I plan to go check out the upgrades over the next couple of months. There was traditionally campsites at Loddon River which would be ideal for what you're after. That's normally around 2hrs from the road. Not sure though where the track re-routes to around here though. I assume you still cross the loddon at the same point?? There was also a campsite at Philps creek but i'm fairly sure the track doesn't go through this section now. Campsites at vera are just past the hut and can sometimes get wet. I normally prefer to stay at the huts due to this. At Tahune, camping is limited. Not sure about southern side of Irenabyss as haven't been down there for years. I thought there were campsites on both sides though? You can certainly do a day walk down to Irenabyss from Tahune.

There is good camping on both sides of the Irenabyss. I've camped on both sides on separate trips.

We camped on the Loddon River in March- lots of mozzies but nice spot. The new track starts after this so it has not been affected. Can't miss the new track. Huts were very welcome for the rainy conditions we had. Have a great trip

The Lodden campsites are very pleasant. Cross the bridge and the best sites are off to your right. Easy to miss in fading light.
