Hi Guys,

Throwing it out there. Im going to head down to Tassie around the first week of June and spend a bit of time peak bagging. At the moment I might start with the Overland Trek and haul myself up some of the hills around there. Afterwards, wouldn't mind having a bash at Feder and Anne. Still researching

Im kind of affiliated with one of the gear stores and will be trying out some new season gear and will be publishing some photo essays afterwards. Im going to drive down and jump on the ferry and poke around depending on weather. I shall bring an axe crampons, snowshoes, a rope and harness. I also lug around a Nikon full frame and tripod so I wont be travelling super fast on the trail.

If you get one of those great clear winter days down there with heaps of snow on the ground the trip will be worth it!

Frenchman's Cap and the Walls of Jerusalem are also worth considering.

Just be prepared. Someone mentioned Frenchman's as an alternative... A few decades ago, two walkers became trapped inside Tahune Hut during a winter trip. They were hut bound under 2.5m of snow for two weeks before being rescued by helicopter, after running out of food.

Be prepared for every contingency

Fedder could be very "interesting" in winter, I'm curious to see how you go

This dude sounds more experienced than necessary for something like the walls or Frenchans which could be done by any overland walker.

Hi Radson, if you're about on the Saturday the 1st my partner and I will probably be heading down to Mt Wedge in the SW, and you're welcome to come along! Not on your list I know, but should have some pretty nice views nonetheless. Only about a 5 hour walk, but may wander up The Needles or Tim Shea on the way back too.

Would have loved to have done other stuff with you, but a busy time of year for me I'm afraid! Good luck with whatever you organise.

True, White Needle is meant to be hard, the others arent that bad, pretty easy to access but offer brilliant walking.

Ahh, the Overland Track, some great peaks, would have to be the first stop definitely! You don't wanna be dragging all that gear on some cold, wet, boring scrub wack

Everything is easy for you though Jared, have you found any peaks tricky yet?

Are there any tricky peaks (and I don't mean hard like the POW peaks)?? I was more worried scaling the top of Bonds Craig than anything I faced on White Needle.

I guess my Sharlands experience is a good example of making an easy peak hard - although I got up there easily enough, getting down was another matter

Bonds, Fedder, Both Geryon's. Hyperion. Anne, Lots wife.... Most people consider peaks like these to be tricky.

I'm pretty soft and did White Needle solo with no problems. Its much easier than a lot of the other "tricky" ones as long as you go the right way.

Well I went done to Tassie and had absolutely glorious weather. Did some climbing around Launceston and across at Freyicent Peninsula. Then went into the OT and went up Cradle and Barn Bluff. Stayed on top of Barn as the sun set and the alpenglow hit. Absolutelt gorgeous. I then popped over to New Pelion Hut. I got up at 4 am to climb ossa and then get out of the park but woke to a freight train roaring overhead. Bailed on Ossa and of course by the time I was a couple of hours out, the wind had subsided. Humped from Pelion to the gate in very icy conditions over the next 8 hours and just was just 10 seconds early for the shuttle bus.

Drove to Launceston that night and Hobart the next morning. I wasnt getting the vibe for Fedder. Had forecasts for snow above 1,000 m and the way my time had worked out, would only have had a less than 3 days for the round trip.

I am thinking of going back to Fedder in late August/Early September now.

We did a similar OT schedule a few years back in August and had poor but funi-ish weather conditions (Yes, we brought it on ourselves for going in August...........). Weather was not too foul (just some scattered showers) on the first day on our haul to Pelion Hut, but as with you a freight train was doing its thing early the next morning but we summited Ossa anyway (roaring blizzard on top so unfortunately no views). Windermere hut that evening followed by Ronnie's the next through deep snow conditions, and caught our flight out of Launceston that arvo with the skin of our teeth.........

Fed Aug/Sep should be interesting - cold. Perhaps ice/snow conditions for your challenge!?!?!?!
