DuCane

Hi Folks
For many years, post traversing the Never Never Valley, I camped at Du Cane: NOT in the hut, but under the trees below the heli pad.
I have not walked thru here for a while and what to check if
(i) people still camp here;
(ii) my memory is there was a toilet here;
(iii) that the creek well away from the camp is safest to drink.

I am not especially thrilled about camping at Kia Ora - noise, crowds, infrastructure, chainswas etc and Du Cane is closer to The Never Never anyway- takes about 45mins of our next day.

Any feedback appreciated.

Yes, there is a toilet - albeit a slightly odd one. (At least there was last time I was there, but that was a few years ago too).

The creek there is not reliable after extended dry periods in summer, but is usually OK. It is well away from the camp.

I think people still camp there. I've camped there a couple of times, but again it was a few years ago.

When passing through recently this was one of the spots I earmarked for camping at next time through. Beautiful spot under Castlecrag at the edge of the Middle earth forest. Have fun :D

Yes - it is certainly "odd". A classic bush facility......

We camped on the helipad assuming it was a tent platform in mid January - not another person in the area. No signage to indicate either way. The toilet is a gem - definitely "middle earth" style.

My previous stay there was in the hut in 1969/70 in a snow storm (late December) and being woken in the middle of the night by the depredations of "Black Pete".
