Bushwalk Australia

Hi there.

My partner and I will be in Tassie during the Christmas period and are hoping to do at least one overnight bushwalk with our 5mth old baby boy. We will carry him in an "ergo" (a baby carrier). He finds it comfortable, but overheating can be an issue, since he sits against my chest. So we plan on doing walks that are both short and easy. Here are some thoughts, just to give you an idea of what we're after...

Freycinet: Walk into Wineglass bay campsite. Leave partner with baby to pick up a second load from the car and bring back to camp. Camp the night, and walk out the following day.

Apsley Gorge: Do the loop as a day walk, then set up camp at the campsite 500m from the carpark. Not really an overnighter but its got walking and camping...

Any other suggestions? Any lesser known tracks with quiet campsites would be great.

I would avoid any alpine areas with a baby that young, so your suggestions are good in that respect. What about Maria Island?

FYI, you can back carry with the Ergo too - he might be a bit small for that yet though.

I'm just trying to think of where would be suitable.
Perhaps Nanawantsapoo NP - thru to copper cove- nice campsite, great beach.- carry everything in one go. Wineglass Bay sounds unfair to at least one parent (and that doesn't bode well for the family unit).
Edit - If you can get into/out of wineglass bay campsite in one trip, then great, you can break the trip up over the whole day, paddling, picnicing, watching, etc etc . 2 trips in for one night would be hard work.

Lion Rock in South Cap Bay could be do-able. I have seen a couple with a baby camping in there before. Relatively flat walking,nice coastal scenery,diverse bushland and there is a reasonably sheltered camp site at the western end of the beach. Would pay to choose your weather widow wisely with a bub in tow though.

You may need to take water into wineglass bay, the water source is not reliable at the campsite in dry weather.

Second that. Maria is a fascinating place to visit. You can either camp or hire a cabin in the penitentiary.

We took the Ida Bay Railway to Deep Hole and camped there when our kids were young. That was nice and we did a day walk to South Cape Bay. (Is the railway still running? I'm not sure as I did hear that it was going to close down.)

Camp at Fortescue Bay and do day walks to Cape Hauy and/or Bivouac Bay.
