Short hikes you can camp on

Postby Wynnston » Mon 17 Feb, 2014 12:43 pm

Hi just trying to find a good short hike to go on with my father inlaw we want to hike in and camp but he's got a bad knee so I'm trying to find something not to steep or long.

Not sure if you're after a mountain but if you are then Ben Lomond might be worth a thought. Just be aware it's a fuel stove only area and camping is not permitted within 500m of any road. You could do the fun drive up to the plateau, then hike from the village. Just under Hamilton Crags has some nice grassy spots (an easy 15 minute stroll about 600m from the road). You could also start from Carr Villa and head through the Big Opening to camp near the plains west of Legges Tor. The mountain doesn't get many visitors outside of the winter months so you'll have no issues finding a spot to yourselves :D . Good luck!

Welcome, Wynnston.

+1 on above suggestions. Does depend a bit on what gear you have. Eg snow showers forecast for this week on Ben Lomond, -1 overnight so you'd need to have decent warm gear. Little protection there if windy, too. But gorgeous in the right conditions.

If you don't have good gear, lowlands better. Let me know if you want more info on camping at Copper Cove.

Cheers

Blue Peaks south of Lake Mackenzie.
You have already 'climbed the mountain' in the car.
Not sure what too long is.

Another option is Lake Nameless, but again whilst flat has a few kms walking.

Hiking poles. I once shunned them. Definitely help dicky knees, even on flat sections.

Thanks guys this has been a great help and I'll defiantly suggest some hiking poles. Next I'll have to convince the wife to come :)

I'd second northern Ben Lomond. The camping out at Menamatta is brilliant and it's within a couple of easy hours of the carpark.
