Mt Lot

Postby DJohnson » Fri 14 Mar, 2014 8:33 pm

Can anyone clear up the conflicting information I have on exactly where Mt Lot is.

An old 1:25k Tasmap shows it further toward Lots Wife at 1156m. This also corresponds with Bushwalk.com's 'List of High Places', which lists Mt Lot at this 1156m mark and then lists Lightning Ridge at 1262m.

However the latest 1:25k Tasmap, which can be viewed on ListMap, shows Mt Lot at the 1262m mark. In addition to this, the 1156m mark has been revised to 1178m. All track notes I have read on the Mt Anne circuit indicates that the track goes right over the top of Mt Lot, which indicates that it is at the 1262m mark.

Can anyone confirm what is correct?

Here is the old Tasmap:

As far as the peak-baggers and high places list goes, the highpoint of the massif is the true summit, so in this case, the new Tasmap is correct in naming the 1262m point as the summit. I will stand to be corrected if this is wrong though.

That's what I thought. But as you said, just seeing if someone can prove otherwise. Is there some sort of official register of mountains?? Might have a look.

There are actually quite a few erroneously marked high points like this on the Tasmap set.

The point marked Lot is 100m lower and is just a bump on the end of the ridge leading down from the summit.

Actually here is a photo of the spot... Its not conflicting really when you actually see it....

It better be, I've already logged the points. Not that I mind the idea of going back in, but there are better reasons.

There is a good argument against it. Most maps tned to agree, not just the inconsistent listmap.

Lot and Lots wife would line up East-West, While lightning ridge runs Sth-Nth. The highest point in the area is in fact the ridge on lightning ridge...

Still for wiw I have counted the points and have not been to the true Mt lot, and wont be hurrying out there anytime soon :-)

That point is the Abel, which is good enough for me.

Is the Abel listed as Lightning ridge? Or Mt Lot though?

There are several stupid contradicting confusions like this on the PB list. Just another reason why we shouldn't get too worked up about it, and in many cases "near enough IS good enough"

Hey, ILUVSWTAS, I might quote you on that! Been a bit ambivalent - went up to the Mother Cummings high point (glad I did, nice walk, great view), but am tempted not to bother with the high point through the scrub past Drys Bluff when I get around to that...

If the weather's good it's not as far as the book makes it sound and is well worth the effort. The scrub isn't that bad and there are good pads most of the way.

Yes the walk out to the Dry's high point is quite fun. Pretty easy.

The list needs to be taken with a grain of salt and interpreted to each individuals wants.
