Lees - Ossa - Never Never - Junction Lake - Lake Adelaide

Postby coffeemankev » Wed 09 Apr, 2014 8:51 pm

Hi there,

I am planning to do the following walk over Easter.

Day 1: Into Pelion via Lees Paddocks
Day 2: Pelion to Kia Ora with an Ossa sidetrip
Day 3: Kia Ora to Junc Lake via the Never Never
Day 4: Junc. Lake to Lake Adelaide
Day 5: Lake Adelaide to Mersey Road

While I have done Junc. Lake area before and Lees I am trying to find out as much as I can about the Never Never. It seems that the best place to cross is just upstream of McCoy Falls (Both the 'old log crossing' and new semi submerged logs) however some people suggest wading it just before Hartnetts Falls.

What is the current condition of the crossings and there accessibility and do you have any pointers for the never never in general?

Cheers,
Danny

There are at least three locations to cross the Mersey. You have mentioned 2 of them. Depending on water flow there is a third. Basically you go to Harnett and follow the rough pad down on the DuCane side of the river until you reach a clearing there are normally a few spots to cross with logs. It is difficult to give an exact location but if you want to PM me I can provide further details.

Kia Ora to Junction via the never never can be a long but good day!

The rest of the trip is reasonable and should be relatively straight forward.

Day 5: Lake Adelaide to Mersey Road

Not sure where you are going out via if Lk Adelaide is your last stop? The Walls carpark is a long way from the Lees track... Unless you've arranged a car shuffle/bike I would've thought you'd exit via Meston/Lk Myrtle (could do a side trip to Rogoona) and then Jacksons Ck, part of which would involve backtracking if staying at Adelaide. Could just replace "Adelaide" with "Meston" in your itinerary, but would make day 4 a bit short... Maybe camp at Myrtle instead and shorten the walk out on day 5? Personally don't think Adelaide on its own is worth a side trip from Meston (which itself has a hut and/or particularly nice beach campsite). Just my thoughts.

No idea about the Never Never... has been nearly a decade since I last went through there, but reading this site it seems that there are a lot more formed tracks now? Surprised there isn't at least a wire crossing installed now?
