Hazards Traverse

Postby chris_a » Tue 22 Apr, 2014 3:57 pm

Hi everyone,

I am planning to do the skyline traverse of the hazards fairly soon, as far as I can tell it is fairly straightforward to go from sleepy bay to mt. Amos. After this I don't really have any information. Has anyone been up Mt. Mayson? Is there an easier way or is it a scrubby fiend? Can you descend to Great Oyster Bay from there or best to retrace to the main track? Also wondering if anyone knows about any good bivvy caves on dove or Amos, I have heard there are a few crackers.

As per usual, please pm any sensitive off track info.

Cheers,
Chris

I don't recall any bivy caves on Dove but saw some crackers on Amos you should come across them en route, but if the weather is on your side the summit area offers an excellent high camp. Mayson I recall one near one of the summits. Mayson is a little scrubby but not too bad when compared to much of Tassies offtrack offerings. Mayson is FUN, in fact it's all fun... :)

EDIT: Yes you can descent to GOB we went up from that side traversed the summit ridge and descended to the saddle with Amos.

Hi Chris

The section from Sleepy Bay to Mt Amos is not really "straightforward" in my opinion. It is a very long, big day and the rocks can be very slippery or very sharp, and routefinding is not as easy as you would imagine.

By all means have a crack at it, but don't be fooled into believing it is a "walk in the park".

There are some "caves" under the big boudlers on the summit of Parsons, and there were some big pools with clean looking water. The section immediately W of here has a deep slot, which requires ropes, or a long deviation from the skyline.

We were given information from various "reliable" Tasmanian bushwalking sources before we did the traverse, and found a lot of it to be not very reliable at all.

Hi again,
Thanks for the tips! Yeah planning 2 full days which will hopefully be plenty of time, will descend from Amos if we run out of time/water/motivation.

This is an excellent walk, the trip from Sleepy Bay to the Wineglass Bay LO will take most of the day. Navigating up and around Mt Parsons and Mt Dove is tricky. You do not need ropes, however you have to prepared to do a lot of sidling and walking up and down to avoid cliffs. There are some nice caves on Mt Parsons. There used to be a route marked by paint on the rocks up to Parsons and a little beyond.
