Lake McKenzie, Basil Steer's hut

Postby walkabout » Tue 22 Apr, 2014 8:35 pm

I have managed to do a couple of nice walks in the last 3 weeks - Lake McKenzie and Basil Steer's hut 1. When at the lake I was hoping to go up Explorer Creek, but there had been some heavy rain in the previous fortnight and signicant other half (wearing a knee support bandage) wasn't game to cross the river and creek on the very slippery looking rocks. Can someone tell me where the best place to cross is? Should it be closer to the lake edge where the water is broader but not so fast, or closer to where the creek and Fisher river converge (bearing in mind that the lake was very low and we won't be going back up there before next summer)? Also, is there a track up the right hand (west?) side of the river? We ended up wandering around to the northern end of the lake and were hoping to find where the end of Parsons track was but ran out of time. Is this easy to locate? Parsons track, from the Mole Creek end, is on our to do list. All in all, a pleasant day with lots of rock hopping, and too much bog. February Plains was a lovely walk with the added surprise of "discovering" the hut, which I had read about in tastrekkers notes. Some pics attached....

Hi W
Cross wherever you like.
Generally I stay to the west on the dry lake bed and cross up high near the influx of the Fisher river
into the dry dam.
There is less mud this way.
The track is a bit indistinct for the first 100m on the east side up the influx
but improves as it turns east up the Explorer Ck.
More difficulties at high dam levels and below Lake Explorer,
search the site for the thread.

Thanks, John.
I suspect we were in the right area, near where the river and creek join, but hubby being a bit unsteady on his feet and being a couple of weeks late (after some heavy rain) we erred on the side of caution. Might have to do a reccy on my own one day when the levels drop.
