heating Scott Kilvert

Hi folks
it's been a good many years (10) since i walked into SK hut and hubby and i are planning on spending a few nights there soon in June. Does anyone know if it has heating and do you think we would be ok to go without a tent?

I can't speak to your query re: SK hut, as I have not stayed there, though it is without doubt prudent to always take a tent in Tasmania - the weather is far to variable to risk not taking one. Remember there was a recent death on the Overland Track arising from inadequate preparation for the local conditions.

Have a read of the wiki or search the forums. I made a thread and then updated the wiki a couple years back.
http://bushwalk.com/wiki/index.php/Overland_Track_-_General_InformationI'd take a tent. I've been caught out on the way there in a blizzard with deep untracked snow and only got to the hut a couple hours after dark. I wouldn't have wanted to be stuck in that weather without a tent.

Good advice, thanks folks, will track down a tent to borrow hopefully, if not, we won't go. Now to find out if it has heating!?

If any hut in the park could attract a rogue element it would be Scott-Kilvert, people have been known to have raucous Xmas celebrations in July there
Take either a) extra warm clothes and bag and or b) spare coal (briquettes)
Take either a) a tent or b) extra provisions for the possibility of being caught in deep snow and c) earplugs
It Is only a couple of hours walking time. I too have needed an over-nighter (dug down into scrub near Artist Pool) though that would be rare.
(..I could relate to you how 'rare' though expressing any definitive from my experience would likely be proved insignificant)
Sounds like fun, wait for snow, even better!

Yep briquettes (coal) are still used in Scott-Kilvert. Supply is never guaranteed, so a good sleeping bag and down jacket would be a wise back-up

It's probably not illegal
.... but it might be simpler to call or email Cradle and ask them if SK currently has briquettes. Contact details for most PWS sites can be found here

We took our own briquettes one time as we knew the coal had run out. I carried 12kg, and I think we had about 25-30kg all up. It was enough for a toasty warm night and we left 4.5kg for the next group. Might be heavier, but it was much more sociable than huddling in a sleeping bag all night. When we arrived cold, wet tourists already there trying to light wet sticks were quite grateful as well!

I don't see how a request for clarification is manipulation, sometimes I find it hard to interpret written text.
Regarding my link, I took the question at face value and was wasn't sure if the answer I had already posted had been missed.
I did not know if what blossom actually meant was "whether there would be fuel at the hut".

Okay most of that went over my head, not sure if people were offended by something people said or not?! But I have had a red wine so maybe I'm just confused ! So my plan is to
1. Take a tent
2. Ask parks n wildlife if there is heating ? Make sure they have actually been there and know!
3. Prepare for the fact that there may well be a Xmas in July celebration!
4. Get husband to carry brickette and red wine to join potential Xmas in julyers!

Personally, it's a mood thing, although my default is 'take the *&^%$#! wherever possible'.
Normality and I don't really get on very well. Some sort of personality clash.

That's a frightening thought. But just ask those who have endured the experience - it's really not worth the effort. I'm a lot less fun in real life.

What I meant was "now to find out if it currently has a good supply of briquettes so said husband can carry wine instead of briquettes for lazy wife!" ....I know it has heating, but just wasn't sure if it has briquettes
hehehehe all good, no offence taken but thanks to the anti bully person who might ave thought I had!

I was in there today. Scrapings of Brickettes in the bottom of the storage boxes, but it looks like there has been a helicopter drop with a big white bag that remains unopened, through which I could read a label saying "Brickettes". So if your heading in anytime soon carry wine, no brikettes.
