Mt Gell from the west

I'm interested in climbing Mt Gell from the west using some old tracks (as seen on the Tasmap 1:25000, near the Alma river) that take you underneath it. The tracks have a locked gate but I am hoping that a mountain bike can make fairly short work of the approach. Has anyone had a go at this? Has anyone been out along the tracks in question?
