Mount Anne vs Freycinet in October

Postby Uncle Jr » Wed 02 Jul, 2014 9:55 pm

Hi there,
I am planning a 4-5 day walk in Tassie in the first week of Oct this year and am tossing up between these 2 options, or anything else tempting that's not too far from Hobart.

Any collective wisdom to help me mKe up my mind?

Cheers in advance

I know where I'd rather be if the foul spring weather comes in............however, if you get a clear calm couple of days Mt Anne would be the best place to spend a couple of days in Tassie.
Wait until the time and plan a trip according to the weather which is a lottery at that time of the year. Have a few options. The two you have chosen are at the two opposite ends of the spectrum.

I agree with tibboh. Having unsuccessfully attempted Mt Anne three times with a dubious forecasts that turned out to be correct (or understating the severity  ), I've decided I'll only head there again when the forecast is good.

Having said that, one of the scariest nights I've spent in a tent was at shelf camp - but it also gave me a lifetime memory of the massive bulk of mt anne glowing deep orange for the few minutes when the cloud lifted. Just spectacular :) :)

Or you could do 2 days in Freycinet and 3 days on Maria Island (or 3/2). The weather is better on the East coast.

Agree with the others
spring time Tassie tends to be be very windy, even more than winter. Wind on Anne can be horrific as it is all more or less exposed.
You may get lucky, just make sure you put little lengths of cord on all your tent peg out points before you leave so you can hold your tent down on the rock!

And be prepared to get up several times during the night to put the (heavy!) rocks, around which you tie the guylines, back where they can keep the tent up.

I walked the Freycinet circuit last spring. Beautiful warm days, no rain, no wind, great sunsets at Cooks Beach :)
