East and West arthurs track notes/advice

Postby backyard_botanist » Thu 04 Sep, 2014 7:14 pm

Hi All,

Planning to traverse the west and east arthurs during december this year, have read chapmans track notes and talked with a few people that have done these hikes. Having read a lot of discussions on here over the years I thought i'd put the feelers out and see if anyone had any good references for track notes or advice on difficult sections ie. 4 peaks, beggary bumps

Cheers,

Vinny

If I remember correctly, there was only one sketchy bit in the Beggaries - not far from the High Moor campsite. It is just a little shimmy down a ledge. Pack haul if you are unsure at all.

The Four Peaks are a series of up and downs. We pack hauled a couple of times through here. While not particularly exposed, the climbs are a few metres high, and can be a little tricky. If you get through the rest of the range to this point you will be fine though.

I thought the worst bit was the descent down from Mount Capricorn. I wouldn't want to do that in a storm...
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.

A couple of downclimbs on the buggeries, but nothing to be too worried about IMO. Only we place we packhauled on the WAs was coming down off Taurus, down the crack that Chapman mentions. We could have gotten away without it, but felt more comfortable doing it.
