In his prime, Mr Sargent founded Craclair Tours, the first business to guide walkers on the Overland Track from Cradle Mountain to Lake St Clair.

In the first year he had no customers at all; there were a handful in the second.

The business would eventually take off and undoubtedly played a huge role in making Tasmania and especially Cradle Mountain a world-renowned tourism destination.

In 1970 - his first full year of business - it was estimated that a few hundred people walked the overland track. By 2005 the numbers were more than 8,000.

"I miss the walking, but we have some great adventures in these boats," Mr Sargent said, starting to push his kayak through the tiny wavelets on the shoreline.

Impressive aren't they. I'd like to think i'd have that sort of energy, if there was ever a chance of even living that long. Good read.
It's good to see some decent story telling, even some personality.

My husband grew up doing food drops for Eric - he and Eric's son were great friends (still are). Eric walked the first section of the Overland Track only a few years ago with his family - they went on to complete the track while Eric walked back out to Waldheim on his own. He's an amazing guy.
