Wild camping

Hi!

We are a Norwegian family of 4 (including our 2 daughters aged 11 & 14) who are spending 4 weeks in Tasmania in December - January. I have a question about the regulations regarding wild camping in the national parks (I find it a bit unclear on the Parks and Wildlife service page). Is it allowed to wild camp outside of the designated campsites in the national parks? We have until now planned on going to The Walls of Jerusalem, Mt. Field and Freycinet.

It depends.

Most Parks are allowed, but some are not. Others have certain locations out of bounds.

You'll have to look at each park and location.

If you are camping with a car then you need to use designated camp sites (Mt Field and Freycinet). If you are away from public roads bushwalking then you can camp most places unless there are specific restrictions (eg the inner walls area in Walls of Jerusalem). You are generally better using the identified remote campsites because of access to water (Freycinet) and to minimise environmental damage.
