Has anyone climbed up on to the Traveller range from the south? Specifically from Lake St Clair Dam or weir? A few of us are heading that way in a couple of weeks and any general advise on conditions and/or areas to avoid or a tried route/GPS track would be appreciated. Any info that doesn't cross the board rules.

Yup. I went up that way a couple of weeks ago. The weir is off limits at the moment due to the construction work at the Pumphouse which is a tad annoying as the lake is quite low. I went via the dam, walked around the lake for a way and then up on to the tops. It was a little scrubby for a while so you may want to try the access via Travellers Rest Lagoon from the forestry roads. I tried to "cut a corner" and probably added a couple of hours. Alternatively trying to traverse from the eastern shore of the lake to TRL through the forest, avoiding the scrubby ridge top.., this might be a better option

+1 Forestry Road's east of Derwent Bridge, South East of Travellers Rest Lagoon.

Depending on where you want to end up, you could also consider coming up from Clarence Lagoon. There's a 4WD track off the Lyell Highway on the Derwent Bridge side of the Clarence River that gets you close to the Lagoon. (Azza may be referring to this??) The walking from Clarence Lagoon to Lake Ina (the direction we went) is easy enough. So too should be walking to Travellers Rest Lagoon (we didn't go there). Then you're right in the Traveller Range and the Mountains of Jupiter. A lot of the walking up there is reasonably open, though there are some tricky fagus sections, especially near lake shores.

We continued walking right through to Lakes Kellatie, Payanna and the Orion Lakes. Fabulous country, in a subtle, Central Plateau sort of way. We exited off-track (rough & steep) down to near the Bowling Green. Enjoy!

Thanks all. The forestry roads towards Travellers Rest are the fall back - a fall back that just got a bit more likely thanks to Doogs info re the weir. But before we change plans= Doogs how far up the eastern shore did you walk before heading up hill? - did you cut up hill from Derwent Basin or further north? and where was that shortcut that wasn't.
We where looking at heading up NNE uphill from about the most easterly point of Derwent Basin and aiming for the clear area (at least its white on the map)about 3 km north. But the map says its all low think scrub to there, did you travel through this area and if so what did you think.
From there we'll be going north via Rim Lake, Ida, Spurling and through to Junction lake and then over Cathedral Plateau. Should be good - at least after we get on top
