suggestions for lesser known tassie walks

Postby lazybugger » Wed 10 Dec, 2014 3:57 pm

Hi all,

I'm new here, and have spent the last few nights reading up on this forum in preparation for our summer of walking in tassie.

so i'm seeking a bit of advice on where to walk, I tried reading up to decide but I'm a bit overwhelmed by the information available. I know much of tassie but not all its walking tracks, and I'm particularly interested in lesser known walks that suit our purposes.

I was an avid bushwalker with decent navigation skills that used to enjoy 10-12 day walks, but over the last 5 years or so I've stuck to day walks as i got fat, my wife is in the same boat and has a temperamental knee. I'm no longer fat but am out of shape, so we'll be warming up with day walks to a number of short walks over the summer, south coast track if we're lucky. we're both very late 30's. I'll jot down our current plans, but we would really like to get suggestions of places i don't know about that are similar in difficulty.

from xmas till 31st
1: day walks Mt William (car camping)
2: 1 day Hartz Mountain
3: 2 days Mt Field West

from 1st till 19th Jan
walk 1: 3 days Cape Pillar
walk 2: 3-4 days Freycinet
walk 3: if we can do two walks prior to the 10th and our bodies are responding well, we had thought of going for the south coast track, but the most likely is another short walk - 4-5 days Pine Valley

2nd - 4th Feb
last walk: 3 days Pine Valley if we manage to do the south coast track or if not somewhere else to be determined.

I've actually done all the walks mentioned above in the late 90's as well as others before i met my wife, but these are all that I know that I would dare to take my wife on with her knee. But maybe there are some other lesser known hikes 'we can do instead with the same degree of difficulty. any suggestions for alternatives don't need to be as classically spectacular either, just being out there in the peace and quiet checks all our boxes. we have a 4wd in tassie as well so we're not very limited.

Any suggestions will be more than appreciated.

Cheers,

Read the Abel's volume 2, and the two main Chapman books and you'll have all the tracks you'll need for a couple of years.

When that is not enough anymore, look up the peak bagging list and search for the tracks to each summit. That'll keep you busy for at least 5 years.
Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful.
