It can be done in a day, although the summit area is wonderful to camp on. Once you get to the main spur there are some steep sections. Route I took in (the more northerly and westerly lines) is pretty well scrub-free.
There are two large parking areas a couple of hundred metres or so south of the hairpin where the 'Edith' marker is in that shot, with a short walking track up on to the ridge north-east of the road. You can park there or near the hairpin. It's almost all open heath and sedge country - with much of it having been burnt, of course.
