I will be visiting Tassie next month on a very quick overnight trip. I will be flying over very early on a Friday morning and meeting up with my parents who will already be over there on holiday. I will be flying out the next day but will be spending most of that day at the football. I will be relying on parents for transport. As we have Friday free I am wondering if there are any waterfalls close to Hobart that are worth visiting. Preferably it will need it to be tourist friendly (made tracks etc) and not too far of a hike as my parents have some minor health issues. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks heaps in advance.

Walk with your parents to Russell Falls and then send them back to the cafe for a coffee and snack while you do the circuit to Horseshoe and Lady Barren falls. Easy day trip and also time to pick up some whisky at Redlands on the way back

Thanks for the suggestion Strider and Tastrax. I have been to Russell Falls a couple of times and so have my parents. They would be worth another visit though and I haven't seen Horseshoe and Lady Barren Falls so that would be another positive.

Please note that Redlands Estate Distillery started distilling single malt whisky in 2013 and our first release will be available soon.

No doubt it would be available a day or two after I leave

O'Grady Falls is very close to Hobart

Or if you want and have time for a bit of a drive, Arve Falls in the Hartz National Park are a very easy walk. You can also do a few other easy walks in the area, such as to Lake Osborne. I was there last week and there was some light very fresh and powdery snow and it was beautiful.

Thanks heaps axcarmil and Strider (again ). I googled Myrtle Gully Falls and O'Grady Falls and both look perfect - reasonably short walks, nice falls and close to Hobart.

Arve Falls might be a bit too far but as a matter of interest is it possible to see the full drop?

Arve Falls. An easy 20 minute walk from the road. the full drop just below this cascade is not fully visible.

Snug Falls are very nice and not a long walk, although a bit steep, but parents go there with small children.
Pelverata Falls nearby is longer and rougher and the lookout is a long way back from the fall, so not advisable for your parents.

Thanks MrWalker. My wife and I had planned to visit Snug Falls a couple of years ago when we were returning to Hobart from Bruny Island. Unfortunately it was pouring with rain on that day so we decided to give it a miss. It is still one I would love to visit. I had never heard of Pelverata Falls so I had to Google them. They look awesome but I think you are right - probably not ideal for my parents.

I actually meant Myrtle Forest. But my favourite waterfall of all time is located just below Myrtle Gully falls. A short but steep climb just off the track, though.

Thanks mate. They are the ones I found on Google. I did notice the falls down stream as well (Secret Falls). If we do visit Myrtle Gully Falls I am sure my parents wont mind if I go off track to visit Secret Falls. Are they easy enough to get to? Obviously I wont have rope with me.

Pretty hard to beat Horseshoe Falls for accessibility & picturesque quality (below, from last weekend).
Lady Barron Falls is a bit of a disappointment, hard to get a good photo as you're right next to them so you can't get a perspective.
The loop walk Russell Falls / Horseshoe Falls / Big Trees Walk / Lady Barron Falls / Lady Barron Creek is really lovely tho.

It is about 5 metres off the track. Down a bit of a muddy bank but that's all. Keep an eye out on your left and you'll see where to go.

My parents and I ended up visiting Russell and Horseshoe Falls. Glad we did. Most water I have seen coming over them. Thanks for the suggestions everyone. Very much appreciated.

My flight back to Melbourne was due to leave at 9.15pm last night but got cancelled at about 10pm. Jetstar couldn't find enough accommodation for a plane full of people so about 40 of us camped out in the airport . Still have another 3 hours to wait for our flight
