Suggestions for annual Tasmania 5 day/4 nigh hike appreciate

Sat 01 Aug, 2015 7:53 am

My hiking buddy (Brisbane based) and I (Melbourne based) manage to get away for only one (family and work commitments) 5 day/4 night hiking trip to Tasmania each year.

Trips so far:
Walls of Jerusalem
Circuit around Cathedral Mtn with a side trip up to Chalice Lake
Mt Anne Circuit clockwise

We fly-in on the morning of day 1 (Hobart or Launceston), drive to trail head and need to get to the first camp before dark. Day 5 also has the reverse time pressures.

For the next trip, Plan A is Southern Ranges (Pindars, PB). Due to the logistics we will get out there regardless of the weather and need to have Plan B, C, etc.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. We are both ex (old 50's) experienced hikers and rock climbers, and are comfortable with exposure, enjoy rocky terrain and prefer ridges rather than hikes in vegetation and mud. The Western Arthurs viewed from Mt Lot look amazing but probably need more time.

Thanks

I think getting to PB and back in that time is pretty ambitious. I think you would need a minimum of 6 days. not impossible though. Just going out to Pindars is well worth it though. You would get through the Western Arthurs in 5 days without too many issues, as long as the weather plays nice.

The other option that comes to mind is the Du Cane Range traverse plus the Labyrinth. Very easy to spend 5 days in this area.

Thanks for suggestion Pazzar. I'll check out Du Cane Range and Labyrinth, and note the time challenge for PB.

I'd second the Labyrinth/DuCane route. More options there if the weather gets really feral. For PB you need a bit more leeway as the 'in case' scenario tends to be the norm.
