I had a sneak peek at the draft of the new Tarkine Trails guidebook today. It's a comprehensive guide for walks, mountain biking and rafting in the Tarkine. It looks amazing.

Due for release before the end of the year, it'll be a must have for many I reckon. Exciting!

"new" ? Was there an old edition ? When I was living in Australia I couldn't find anything on the Tarkine, I wanted to do daywalks there and it was a crazy challenge. I hope this guidebook will be comprehensive and will help people exploring the Tarkine, from easy daywalks to multiday expeditions.

Yes it's a revised edition of the original from 30 years ago which was produced long before the western Explorer Road or the road to nowhere were constructed

How will access to these 10 mountain bike trails be affected if the area now known as 'The Tarkine' becomes a National Park ?
How will other current recreational activities in this historically mixed use area be affected if it becomes a National Park?
How will the Tasmanian Government adequately fund this massive increase to the National Parks estate, considering they are underfunded now?

ETA: Current users would be funding an exclusion/restriction of their activities.

1/ I'd imagine access would be safer(no log trucks rippin' through those roads) and possibly expanded - check out the $$$ for local economies from mtn bike tourism.
2/ Hopefully, actually policed and formalised. The rednecks that intimidate and bully softer users will hopefully be educated to the point they understand the significance of that country. And then enjoy a respectful mixed use NP.
3/ With any luck the nepotism and fear mongering in govt processes will be exposed, and the Tasmanian public will stop funding a dying industry and it's coffer-draining infrastructure. AND PWS will get a MASSIVE funding increase. It's lovely to have a positive view of the future.

My first real introduction to the Tarkine was from the original book and it opened up a whole new world for me, so I'm really looking forward to seeing this one.
Hopefully it will also open the eyes of those that not ventured into this vast area.
So many hidden gems.

So incredibly proud to see this publication realised. Without doubt the best and most beautiful Tasmanian walking/touring guidebook ever produced. So many images from the Tarkine in Motion photographers. Well done to everyone and especially Phill Pullinger Ben Wilkinson and Jenny Weber so much awesome. Got my copies in the mail yesterday, awesome looking book! Have been wanting to get to the Tarkine for a while now, no excuse not to any more . Tarkine Coast Track sounds like a winner, when I can find the time.

I got mine in the mail yesterday too. Yay! As Dan says, it's a great product - the result of a big collaborative effort - with the writer(s), editors, designers and photographers deserving special mention. Glad I was able to make a minuscule contribution with the rosella pic on p. 200

Get hold of one for Christmas if you can. But most of all get out there and visit the area to show it's still "ours".
