Quickest access to Mt Victoria?

Thu 01 Oct, 2015 10:02 am

Just wondering the quickest way from Lonnie to Mt Victoria - if the road via Diddleum Plains & Paradise Plains to Mathinna Plains is in reasonable condition at the mo or not.

Ta for any info.

The quickest way is by helicopter....

The road was in pretty decent condition when we went through earlier in the year. The drive through the Fingal Valley is much nicer though.

Might do that one way. I was thinking the alternative was via Scottsdale etc, but yours is a better idea.

That is also a nice drive, but it is much longer and windier. I came back that way after climbing Saddleback, Albert and Young. We tried for Victoria too, but a storm rolled through as we were having lunch in the car. Not the best road to drive when tired!

I was at the Mt Victoria carpark a week ago and there were no problems with the road. We went via Scottsdale and Ringarooma this time and it is the shortest and fastest route, but last year we went back via Upper Blessington. I hadn't thought of going via Fingal valley.

On the maps it looks like Diddleum rd - Ben Ridge rd would be the shortest, followed by Scottsdale - Ringarooma, then Fingal - Mathinna plains.

Yes, I didn't notice Diddleum Plains Rd as an option. It would be shorter but might not be faster, However, I went out from Ben Nevis that way a few months ago and the road is quite OK for an unsealed road.

Thanks everybody.

I was going to take note of times for the record, but what with some distractions and faffing  , I can just report that the Diddleum Plains Rd is in excellent nick, with the odd pot hole being filled in by a road crew we passed. Yep, dusty, but we didn't come across any other vehicles, so it didn't matter.

The Fingal Valley was a nice variation - longer, of course, but a much easier drive, but some lovely bits, and a different view of the Ben Lomond Plateau etc.

Lovely little mountain, and so accessible! Anywhere outside Tassie the place would be crawling with people. We spent an hour on top soaking in the view, with a rock lounge providing great respite from the WIND.

Only down side was my friend slipped off a rock and hurt her back. Ok to walk out but less good today. :-( My thigh strain slowed me down somewhat but my physio is all for me using it. :-)

Seems to be a bit of that going around. Did the same thing coming down another peak a week back. The bruises are impressive but luckily there's no real damage - just a bit stiff and sore.
Hope the leg gets better quickly. And your mate's back, of course.
