Wineglass/Hazards Campsites busy in early January?

Sun 01 Nov, 2015 9:50 am

Hi there - does anyone have experience of how busy the Wineglass Bay and/or Hazards Beach campsites usually are in early January?

Hoping to take a friend from the UK, myself, and my partner (perhaps also others) camping - and it has to be the 5th of Jan. Would like to turn the Wineglass/Hazards circuit into an easy overnighter. Fun way to show my visitor a bit of Tassie life and scenery...but...if we get in and there's nowhere to camp, it's fine we can walk out pretty easily...but...all the fee-paying campsites around Coles Bay & all regular commercial accommodation is pretty booked up...so we might not have anywhere to sleep! We'll just be travelling by car - have slept fine with just the two of us before but three or more would be terrible.

So wondering whether I have a fair chance of finding a space to pitch a tent or two at Wineglass or Hazards (and then come what may), or whether I give up on the camping idea and book one of the few remaining properties in Coles Bay/Swanwick asap!

Thanks in advance :)

I think it is highly dependent on what day of the week it is. I've walked the circuit twice, and have found that the campsites are much less busy on weekdays. We had Wineglass Bay campsite just about to ourselves when we were there on a Wednesday night, while on a Sunday night, it was chockers. Then again, early January is in the summer holidays, and it may very well be permanently busy.

However, all three campsites on the circuit are quite large, and there are a numerous amount of sites, ranging in size, so if it were busy, I reckon you would be able to find a spot.

The campsites are fairly large. Even if its busy, you should still find a spot. I've been in there mid week in Jan a few times and have had no troubles snagging a spot

Its been a very dry spring, and Freycinet is known to be pretty dry to start with.
There is a tank at Cooks Hut, but it could be running low.
I think its probably fair to assume that your going to need to carry a fair bit of water to be sure.
I'm sure the rangers would have an idea, but I reckon they'd advise you to carry plenty of water regardless.
