MArlborough highway to the Walls and out the Little Fisher

Postby Mafeking09 » Wed 20 May, 2009 10:13 pm

WE're planning a trip for next year going from Lake Ada across to the Walls and possibly out the Little Fisher. Anyone seen any huts through there that might be worth a visit. We like to visit the historic huts.

I'd be interested in a private pm answer to this one too...I should note that there is none that I know of along the route you suggest, which was actually the first semi-formal route across the plateau from the early 1800's. Half way down the Little Fisher river track there is the ruins (and I mean ruins) of an un-finished hut started by Boy Miles.

Have you read the book "Identities and history of Tasmania's high country" by Ned Terry. It might give you some info about huts in the region. Edit: There are quite a few copies available in the Tasmanian library system.

Hi everyone - really appreciate the tips on this. My mates and me have been walking in Tas now for nearly 30 years doing trips most years. Nowadays we take our older kids who can carry packs. The huts really add another dimension to the whole experience but it's a fragile thing - some of the areas really are so fragile that they can't stand much traffic. I suppose the idea grew out of seeing where my UNcle Maf had his hut up near the Vale.
I'll follow up those books. By the way, we found Frog Call by Greg French really useful as well when combining walking and fishing trips which we've done a few times including one cracking trip from St Clair across to Bronte. You'll need to educate me about private conversations as i'm still getting used to the site.

There are several ways to initiate a 'private message' (PM). The easiest way is to click the little "PM" icon in a person's mini-profile next to any of their posts. This will go to a page with a new private message already addressed to that person (and quoting the post from which you clicked it). You just have to fill in the actual message itself (and optionally delete the quoted content, and change the subject), and submit it. The person will then be notified that they have a new private message waiting for them (either by email, or by pop-up window, depending on their settings).

last year I walked from Ada to Walls and back. There is a hut at Lake Antimony Chapman calls it Hut No5. Good camping around it. Then a beautiful wall up the Bernes valley to the Walls

The detailed maps of the area show all the huts numbered 1 - 5 in the area.

If you do a search of http://www.thelist.tas.gov.au on Lake Antimony Hut 5 is clearly marked.

Not sure if the link above will work.
