Lapoinya logging

Fri 08 Jan, 2016 9:29 am

The local community of Lapoinya in North West Tasmania are fighting hard to stop imminent clear felling of a beautiful forest in their area. More information can be found at https://www.communityrun.org/petitions/ ... ar-felling and https://www.facebook.com/flaglapoinya/

This is giant freshwater crayfish terrain, isn't it? Insane to be logging in there.

Shows the insanely belligerent ideologically driven cowards that run this state. The local community even offered to buy the land to protect it, but were knocked back by FT. And yes, endangered/threatened species habitat destruction, practically de rigueur here. Sigh...

Involved in concerns over a wider set of (inexcusable) actions, looking for contact details, I found some press on this issue:

Bob is out there today.

Today I am visiting the contentious Lapoinya forest in NW Tasmania to back local farmers and tourism operators who want the forest spared from state wide logging operations.
At stake is a vital habitat of the worlds largest freshwater crayfish, listed as threatened with extinction by the State and Federal Governments and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature. The State Government’s own official advice is that bush should be protected from logging to help this amazing creature survive in clear water streams like Lapoinya. There are 800 000 hectares of state forest available for Ta Ann and other customers, surely this 49 hectares can be sensibly protected to stop the Lapoinya community's heart being broken. Logging it will be an own goal for Forestry Tasmania which wants Forest Stewardship Certification - impossible if you are damaging the habitat of globally listed wild animals. Bob Brown.

I'm not sure if that is good news for Crays or bad news for Crays.

It just shows what an obscene govt and their FT whores really are that are destroying our beautiful island piece by piece..and most Tasmanians remain silent..
