Least scrubby way to Markham Heights?

Postby Tortoise » Wed 13 Apr, 2016 11:15 am

Hoping to go with a scrub-averse friend to Markham Heights soon. Looks like 3 options - from the Carr Villa track, the Legges Tor track, or from the lookout at the top of Jacobs Ladder.
Any suggestions?
Ta for your thoughts.

I did it from the Legges Tor track. Not really any scrub to deal with. There is a bit of scoparia, but it was easy enough to wind around it all. I made a half day trip out of Stonjeks LO, Legges Tor, Coalmine Crag, and Markham Heights as a circuit.

Thanks, Pazz. Legges Tor track it shall be. Unfortunately the only other peak I'm after up there is Mensa Moor - which would stretch the said friendship a little too much, I fear.

Mensa is a big day trip. I'm going to wait for a big dump of snow and then snow shoe out there, hopefully eliminating a lot of scrub!

I have done Markham Heights from near the lookout.
As its only 500m, I rushed up there in a hurry without gaiters or any scrub protection.
It was scratchy, but didn't take long.

Certainly looked a lot more open from the direction of the Legges Tor track.

Good luck with that... Its going to be a pretty extraordinary dump that gets you all the way out there.
The valley heading out that way would be lucky to get enough snow, its just a bit low.

If you stick high on the ridge line over Coalmine and Magnet Crag all the way it might be possible.
I have memories of cross country skiing out to Coalmine - back in mid the 90's.

Did it as part of a loop, from Menamatta to Old Bills to Misery and Markham and then back to the Legges Tor track. The Legges route is definitely the least scrubby. Quite pleasant walking, in fact.

As for Mensa, bite the bullet and embrace your inner masochist.
