To celebrate 100 years of national parks in Tasmania, the government has announced that there will be free entry to all national parks in the State during the September school holidays (24 September – 9 October 2016).

I dunno why. All I know is that made the original post as a warning that parks might be overrun.

Only the car parks and barbecues - very few will stray further than 2 or 3 km. To me a good decision as the more people enjoy the parks the greater the public sentiment for their protection.

Not move far is a fair point, & I doubt they'll get many, not at that time of year. Not to save a few $ for something not bothered with before (or likely after). But i'd like to see the figures for some of these assumptions or the outcomes. A track out of bounds to generate walker income, a road closed to support a bike race, a chopper pad here, private hut there.. no big deal? (sarcasm)

I tend to agree. All this smoke and mirrors, revenue gathered, support gathered, nothing measured, nothing accounted, no need to as long as it sounds good. A public service being generous with income from those who already show support.

At the end of the day, do we think the various players, pollies and developers, will be satisfied when all the parks look similar, like Mt Field and Cradle Mt. (The later, an example of what's to come, fast becoming a neglected mess in the process.. yet even there, not nearly enough.. yet..).
