Going down to Mt Field or Wylds Crag this weekend.
I would like to do any overnighter in MT Field Area but the walks all seem to be day walks.
I would like some ideas for over night or even better a 2 nighter in that area.
I have not been up into the Mt Field area since the 1970's. Cant remember anything about it.

Good afternoon Roger,

I walked 3 - 4 days there. Have your fax number and will fax the information including Topo to you tomorrow morning. The info can be found in Chapmans "Bushwalking in Australia", 4th edition.

The 1:25k map 'Wylds' should get you there ok; it shows the track to the summit.
Look out for tags on you right indicating the start of the walk not long after crossing the bridge over the Florentine River (much as indicated on the map).
There is a log book not far up the track.
The track is generally well tagged & easy to follow (a little bauera & fallen logs across the track higher up from memory).
I was last there in July 07, being a little dry there was no snow but it was very, very cold.
It took us about 5.5 hours return from memory, tho you'd be best to allow a little bit more as we didn't linger on the summit.
Hope you get better views than the inside of a cloud which is all we got, the views over to the Denison Range would be impressive.
Hope to get a clearer spell next time I am up that way.

Cheers.
Stu.

My advice on Wylds Craig - don't do it in summer, there are @#$@ loads of snakes.

Track start is on the Tiger Road, which comes off the Florentine Road, which is off the Gordon River Road. You need to go well past the Lake Rhona turnoff if you know where that is. Do a search for Wylds Craig on listmap on the 1:25000.

No sign at the track start, just a little pile of rocks on the left with a stick poking out of it IIRC. Track is easy to follow, not really anywhere you could wander off and get lost unless it snows.

Apart from that, it's probably in the realms of 6 hrs depending on your speed, think it took me and Az around 6. Not really much to see on the way up but the view from the top is good.

[EDIT: AAAAAARGH! Beaten!]
