Hi I just decided that my next overnight trip will go to the central plateau. So I had a look at the map and thought that the two options above are my favourites. What do you think is the nicer option. I'm that kind of person who doesn't mind to camp in an exposed area, so I was thinking I could camp on Ironstone mountain. Anyone done that before? Does anyone have a better option in that area?

I'm itching to get up there too. There's a few walking in the Chapman and Tyrone Thomas books up there- Lady Lake for one, and others too.

I suggest that NEAR Ironstone Mountain would be more astute however who am I to judge

From what I can see in the map the are on top of Ironstone Mountain is almost flat, so it should be not a problem to set up a tent there, and I guess water is not a problem at all in that area, or am I wrong in any of these?

It is pretty exposed and rocky up there but I imagine you would find somewhere to pitch a tent, so long as it is a decent one (if the weather goes bad) and you don't mind a lumpy bed. Being the highest point (I think) on the Western Tiers means there aren't any streams or anything, however I suspect at this time of year there might be a bit of water or snow about. Can always retreat to the hut.

A great trip in that area is to do a loop going up to Lady Lake (which has possibly the nicest hut in Tassie!! - even foam mats up there!) and then walk across the exposed escarpment to Lake Nameless. there is a small, dark cold hut there (may be nicer in a tent) but the lake is amazing. in winter it has been known to freeze over!!!! from here you can go up Ironstone and then back down the usual Ironstone day trip track which almost fulfills a loop - just a short walk along the road to the car! brilliant trip. can be very cold and windy tho.

Thank you all for your infomation. I had an early mark on FRiday so I just went up there Friday to Saturday. We could only start walking at 12, which is a bit late. We went up the Western Creek track, had a lot of strong winds and quite a bit of snow up on the plateau. We arrived at the lake only at 10 to 4, and the weather was not that good, sadly we could not find a camp spot at the lake so we headed back and pitched our tent near the hut. The next morning it was snowing, so we planned to head back home, but after a while it cleared up so we decided to give it a go. We didn't make it to the summit but still enjoyed it. Anyway this is certainly worth another trip, it's close to Launceston, and not very busy Probably next time we walk the loop MichaelP suggested.
