Bastion Bluff - via stone hut track

Postby Thomas » Wed 19 Oct, 2016 4:49 pm

Hi all,

Can anyone provide some info on getting to Bastion Bluff via stone hut track?? Whats the track like...is it clearly marked..? How far up stone hut track can you drive.??

...or if its not possible, maybe just head up MC Peak. Any info on the creek crossings from smoko road would also be helpful..!

Thx all !!

I was up there a few months ago. The track was well marked (steep in spots) till we joined the Dell Track. had to scout around a bit to find tapes - mainly because the mist was blowing in and out, and we wanted to be on the actual track when we were heading up to the plateau. That was pretty good track with cairns, just had to keep an eye out here and there.

You park at the quarry at the end of Quarry Rd, and the start of the walk is signposted. I think the signage to get there was pretty good.

I only walked a small section of your proposed route a few weeks ago, from bastion bluff down to smoko road by I think the dell track. ( I came from ironstone mtn) The very highest section is overgrown but reasonably easy to follow once you're on it, but lower down lost it a few times between rock fields. I could not find the turnoff to the stone hut track and took a while to get back on the dell track. The plateau is huge, make sure you remember where to head back down !

Good points, CN. I made a waypoint at the top of each track on the way up, which could have saved a fair bit of faffing around. Not sure which bit was overgrown, though. I don't recall any really overgrown bits, and I was with a friend with an aversion to scrub. It was mid June when I was up there.
I do need to remember my definition of a good track has become looser in recent years. There were probably quite a few spots where we had to look around for tapes/cairns.
And I would have missed the sign to the actual 'Stone Hut' cave - it was lying on the ground where the track did a sharp turn, but my observant young friend spotted it. Very cool indeed!

Thx all.!

I did manage to get out yesterday for a toddle up the valley. By the time that i reached the junction for Bastian Cascades & The Dell, the viewing weather wasn't great, so headed for the Cascades instead....was very disappointed in what i found. climbed down the gully only to find that I couldn't get to the bottom due to lots of storm damage...well assume it's storm damage.. :? Scanned maps show additional track to the base of the cascades from the end of the road...has anyone tried this one..??

Next time....it will be straight up Bastion Bluff...!!!!!

Disappointing, but hey...it was nice to be out there..!

Rgds,

Thomas.
