The Ironbound Range

Tue 06 Dec, 2016 7:51 pm

Hi there
I was just wondering can anyone out there point me in the direction of any verifiable references that might tell me the origin of the name Ironbound Range. Was it surveyors? Ship wrecked sailors making they way back to Hobart? I've heard both versions but can't seem to find anything to back either of them up.
Thanks
Ross

Often the Nomenaclature Board of Tasmania has some info. You can search at https://www.placenames.tas.gov.au/#p2. The only details on the Ironbound Range is a note saying "Not Prince George Range".

Back in the days of sailing ships, it was noticed that there was a magnetic anomaly nearby. So it was assumed that there must also be a iron deposit nearby.

Some of the rocks have some reddy colour streaks to them in, so possibly they could have assumed that to be similar to iron oxide?

If memory serves me well, Robinson referred to it in his journals (published as The Friendly Mission) as the Ironbound Range when he walked along the coast from Hobart to Port Davey in 1829. I'll check when I am back at work in a few days.

The pretyman index is pretty authoritative when it comes to Tasmanian place names.. Find it on the Tasmanian archives website. You used to be able to bring up PDFs of Pretyman's file cards but trying it tonight all I'm getting is an endless loop linking back to the index.

Edit: Just remembered how to find the index cards - no mention of the provenance of the ironbound range, but for those interested in Tasmanian nomenclature here's the resource from h-k

Hi and thanks for your replies. Much appreciated.
Benoloughlin - did you find anything in Robinson's account?

I had a look at Robinsons journal 'friendly mission's he doesn't mention the range by name, the editor does in the footnotes with no mention of the provenance of the name.

Hi Ross,
My apologies for the delay. I did review Robinson's mission to the Port Davey tribe and slparker is correct, he doesn't mention the Ironbound Range by name, just that he traversed a big mountain in the vicinity of Ironbound - so I am taking it that it had not yet been named in 1829.
kind regards,
Ben
