Emergency gadgets

Postby sweetade » Wed 04 Jan, 2017 1:48 pm

I'm seeking others' opinions on what emergency devices would be good to take for a 3 person group on the OT (early Feb.). Sat. phone, PLB, both? I've also heard of sat sleeve for iPhone. I'd most probably be thinking of hiring rather than buying.
This kind of gadgetry is new to me. I did the OT solo 40 years ago and didn't worry too much except for avoiding side trips. But especially with two of us in our 60s, it seems prudent to think about these things.

Hiring a PLB would be the go. Sat phone probably overkill on the OLT(and more expensive to hire)...there will be heaps of people about and if it's a real emergency the PLB will do....

A PLB would be a good backup, I wouldn't bother with a sat phone for the OLT. As SBS said there will be plenty of people in February, probably including track rangers. Also a sat phone is just another thing to carry and it all adds up.

Contact Service Tasmania, you can hire a PLB pretty cheaply for 2 weeks.

Unfortunately they aren't open on weekends which is when I arrive just before the walk.

I think they are also available at Cradle Mountain - give them a quick call to check
