Tasmanian Mountains - Google Earth File

Postby jbeardsley » Tue 27 Oct, 2009 1:42 pm

Hi guys,

I'm only new here, so forgive me if this post isn't in the appropriate spot (can someone please move it?). Anyway, I'm a pretty keen bushwalker, among other things (peak bagging in particular) and I've found the list of 'high' and 'not so high' places on the wiki very handy at times. When I'm not out walking, I'm studying at UTAS (surveying & spatial science), so I have a big interest in using satellite imagery/GPS etc. Today I decided to take all the information on the two wiki pages and transform it into a Google Earth file (for use on a computer or transfer to a GPS) - it contains all the 'high' and 'not so high' places from across Tasmania (effectively all the mountains in Tasmania). It includes all the information that's on the wiki's as well (TASMAP names/numbers, altitudes and regions) - this can be accessed by clicking on the mountain name. It's also been crossreferenced with the Peak Bagging Tasmania points list and categorised accordingly (first by region, then by point rating). The icons are colour-coded to match the peak-bagging rating (see below). It's been designed so that you can turn specific regions 'on' and 'off', rather than being overwhelmed with 1000+ mountain names.

Yellow Icon = Unrated (No Peak Baggers Rating)
Purple Icon = 1 Point
Lime Green Icon = 2 Points
Aqua Icon = 3 Points
Red Icon = 4 Points
Olive Icon = 5 Points
Purple Icon = 6 Points
White Icon = 7 Points
Silver Icon = 8 Points
Orange Icon = 9 Points
Blue Icon = 10 Points

The file is attached. Simply open it in Google Earth and copy it to your 'My Places' folder. Hopefully it might be useful for some of you in planning your next walking trip(s) or putting in your GPS as a reference. Feel free to upload it to either of the wiki pages as well, if anyone thinks it could be of some use in the future.

NOTE: I can't vouch for the accuracy of the provided coordinates - they are merely taken from the Bushwalking Tasmania wiki. I accept no responsibility for the quality/accuracy of this data - USE AT YOUR OWN RISK!

Ah cool, I made up a similar file last week, following instructions from viewtopic.php?f=5&t=2726
This one is better though, I like what you've done with the point system.
Thanks.

Need to be very basic like press this and go to that (I do have Google Earth installed) and if written in non computer speak I can in the main understand instructions so any help will be appreciated please.

Corvus, just copy the file to your computer. Then open google earth. Then double click on the file you downloaded and it should open in google earth. When you are exiting google earth it will ask if you want to save the file in your google earth favourites, do so and then any time you open google earth you can select that file

just dont press the 'delete all' button (above the enter key)...

There is a recent update for google earth which you may want to do. but it shouldn't be hard to follow the prompts.
happy to help if you can't get it working.

What software or websites are good for aerial photos apart from Google Earth? I want to use searchable aerial photographs like that which you find on Google Earth to check the types of areas which houses for sale are in to help my property search. However, the houses I am looking at are in rural areas and are not covered by Google Earth and the two websites I found are not searchable in the same way. Anyone know any other sites or software I could try? Thanks!

I've been working on something similar.
I created some custom icons with the number of points and used the High Points Spreadsheet.
One of the issues for me was that Google Earth is okay, but I really wanted to be able to overlay the peaks onto the 100k and 25k Tasmaps for planning trips and potentially something which could be used on a mobile device. So I've built something that combine VE, Google Earth and the Tasmaps into a single interface.

FYI - you can use the KML in Google Map's. You just need it hosted somewhere and put the URL into the Search Query box on Google Maps and it'll render it.
Or: http://maps.google.com/maps?q=http://<put the address in here>/peaklist.kml

Hi mourry
Have you tried THELIST? (Land Information Services Tasmania)
http://www.thelist.tas.gov.au/
[click on LISTmap, and you should be able to put in property ids / addresses or coordinates for the location you are after]
Cheers
Kramster :P
PS: I'm assuming you are after Tasmanian property information here... ignore me if otherwise

They have a car setup with multiple cameras and GPS on its roof and they drive around all the roads to get images for their streetview

In addition users of Panoramio can have their photographs tagged to a location and then accepted into Google Earth for all to see.
