Bcinya and I went for a walk along the South Wellington Track week.
It was a good and enjoyable stroll.

This time we did from the Potato Fields up.
Last summer it was from the top of the Icehouse down.

From about 900 metres to around 1120 metres we added a few extra markers [pink surveyor ribbon] to help in defining where this track is going. There are sections in between there that we found hard to find last summer - hence the walk this time to discretely remedy the 'problem'.

It was a long day - stopping tying stopping tying etc etc

I did check out with Parks and Wildlife and found it was OK with them.

That's interesting to hear. Did they provide any restrictions or regulations for doing this, or did they make any checks to be sure that you would be marking the route correctly?

I'm not questioning your abilities or practices here, but merely wondering what Parks' position is on this sort of thing. I've certainly been grateful when this has been done on a couple of routes I've used in the past - speeds up the navigation an awful lot.

The section of track I mentioned had become 'blind' in the sense that the crains are breaking down or getting overgrown.

We did it as a 'workplace health and safety' matter.
I'm not such a purist that I need to get lost/delayed to have a deep and meaningful Outback experience.

I wasn't aware that yet another body has jurisdiction of the South Wellington area.
The impression I got from P&W is that they appreciate the contribution walkers can make to help maintaining tracks and the like.

BTW I suggest you wear long pants and gaiters for the walk.

but you still get keys off PWS for access to the firetrails for 4wding... i had not thought about it till now but you raise a good point, im sure the management trust are meant to 'run' the place

In a nutshell, the trust does most of the planning type work but the on ground work in the park is done by other land managers (PWS, Hobart City Council, Glenorchy council etc). In the case of the fire trails, one of those managers (PWS) has agreed to manage the key distribution regardless of who is the land owner/land manager. For funding of works the trust might apply for funds/grants in conjunction with the appropriate land owner/manager.

The Wellington Park Ranger (funded by the Trust) also works from a PWS office at Glenorchy (Direct line 6233 6680)

The area you refer to from Potato Fields is managed on a day to day basis by the Hobart City Council. I reckon they and/or the Wellington Park Management Trust would be interested and want to know what it now looks like with the markers. Normally only sanctioned marking is allowed, for obvious reasons.

There seemed nothing complicated about all this. I just rang 1300 368 550 [DPIPWE] and asked for PWS.
Explained what I was wanting to do - specified the track, and appreciation was expressed.

What are your ideas on placing tags/tapes ?

I don't have any ideas on it myself and as said earlier, I've appreciated places where other people have done it in the past. I was just a bit surprised by Parks' response as I had been led to believe they didn't like it. Although I can't remember where I might have heard that - maybe just my bad memory.

More precisely 166478 to 184484 [Wellington Park Map] above the Potato Fields.
From all appearances I doubt that section is managed at all.

Thanks mate.
One idea I have is to re-visit that track and see how it looks.
It could be that some subtraction/addition might be in order to tighten things up.
