Can anyone advise about routes from Chinamans Plains to Ida Bay (not bag peak) and how much time to allow for such a walk?

I would suggest - Chinaman Plains - Ling Roth Lakes - Mts of Jupiter - Rim Lake. Buy and take the 1:25,000 maps and then follow as much as you can the white areas on the maps - try and link these up and you will find the going no too bad. There is a band of scrub getting past the Ling Roth Lakes (including some fagus) - but is scrub is not too bad (by Tassie standards). It is an area that you should not need detailed route notes to walk in. Times - about 2 - 3 days from Lake Ball to the Mts of Jupiter, then about 2 days from there, but allow extra for bad weather. But you can escape down to Lake Artemis and Junction Lake.

A couple of us are heading to Ling Roth Lakes and Mts of Jupiter as part of an anticlockwise circuit walk of the Plateau from Lake Nameless and we were wondering whether or not to include Mt Ida but I think that 2 days each way required for that last stretch might be beyond our time scedule. I'm just curious Lindsey as to what the attraction is at Ida Bay? Perhaps its a a good place for a beach holiday but it never occured to me to even think of going there. Or is someone picling you up from there in a boat? Can anyone tell me if they know of people who have gone over there by boat or canoe to climb Mt Ida? Thanks for your interest.
