I was watching the cricket yesterday and they had low angle shot of the ground with Mt Wellington in the background. Describing the scene for the benefit of viewers Michael Slater says: " A beautiful picture that with Cradle Mt in the back ground. " He must have been given the heads up because next over he corrected himself. Hope he knows his cricket......

Hahaha thats terrible. Just when im trying my hardest to be nice to mainlanders...... Article in the Mercury today too saying that 11 of the last 12 bushwalkers "rescued" by helicopter have been from the mainland. Varying from our friend the Breminator to a guy who didnt want to walk over some rocks cause they looked a bit slippery......

I saw that, couldn't stop laughing
But then again the media seems to be able do dictate to sporting bodies when and where they will play, maybe they took it to the next level and can move mountains now...

Actually the article said that 11 out of 12 rescued were from the mainland OR OVERSEAS. I bet at least 11 out of 12 walkers in Tasmania are from the mainland or overseas.
Anyway, a few rescues are probably as good a use as any for the mainland taxes that prop up the Tasmanian Government.

Settle down chumsy, I'm from 'the mainland' and guarantee I know Tas better than most Taswegians, in fact I bet I knew more about it than most before even getting here!
Just don't ask me about WA

I'm really not sure I would trust those figures. I don't think the mercury would get any access to the official search and rescue stats so I think 11 out of the last 12 that were KNOWN BY THE MEDIA. A lot of rescues happen without the whole media hype - but as soon as tourists or interstate visitors get involved it would obviously get harder to hide...

The fellow mentioned in the article ( Chris R ) that has helped with the rescues is a fairly trustworthy source.

tomberli has a good point though, the story is MUCH better if interlopers can be demonised - oldest trick in the book.

This thread reminded me of a good laugh re Cradle Mt at some advertising persons expense. I took this photo of an Ansett promotional poster for Cradle Mountain at Melbourne airport in January 1971 on my way home from my first bushwalking trip to Tassie to see Lake Pedder, Frenchmans, and Overland track. No - its not the view from Lake Rodway

I'm sure I saw a similar image on a Tasmanian Road Atlas (NB: not the Tasmap one) a couple of years back too
