I've had reception on the Pine Valley Heli Pad.

Looks like you are asking about more than Pine Valley - or are you actually referring to the Pine River near the Walls?

Peter J alerted to me to more extensive coverage on the Central Plateau in this post -
http://bushwalk.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=3&t=2977&p=34783&hilit=phone+central+plateau#p34783
His walk went through Ada and Antinomy.

We did not get near there - but we did get significant coverage in places coming down from 40 Lakes Peak to the Walls.
The basic principle is that any elevated spot which can get a view towards the SE should have coverage.
Telstra also provide a coverage map - see http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/networks/coverage/state.html
Once you bring up Tasmania you can zoom in and pan to get more detail - and the Central Highlands looks fairly good.

I was able to get Next G reception on the hill tops overlooking Lake Silver; had to roam around a bit to find a good spot. It was better with Nokia phones than with my iPhone.

Pine Valley is a known dead area for all sorts of comms, I don't like your chances unless you're prepared to climb up high.

Is the area under discussion the Pine valley up from Lake St. Claire or the Pine river valley which starts at Lake Ball and runs as Solveig,Sonja,Sally. Silver and Antimony
I think it may be the latter, in which case there is service in some spots.

The signal waxed and waned on the shore of Silver. I managed to send/receive a couple of SMS's one evening but the signal wouldn't stay up long enough for a conversation. Had to gain a little bit of altitude for that.

I've changed the topic title in order to reduce the confusion with the area that most Tasmanian walkers know as Pine Valley (near Lake St Clair, not near Lakes Silver & Antimony).
